The theme for the Batsford Prize 2023 is 'At Peace'. "We are looking for entries that show innovative and well-crafted interpretations of the theme, in terms of subject or materials used, or a combination of the two."

I decided I wanted to create a storybook for children and I wanted to follow a story or poem. The poem/story I ended up writing was as follows:

Once a dog lived with his friend.
An elderly owner until the end.
They played and laughed, they ran and roamed,
But one day, the owner's spirit had flown.

The dog was sad, lost and alone,
No more belly rubs, no more home.
But fate had other plans in store,
A family came and knocked on the door.

They saw the pup and felt his pain,
And knew they had to bring him home again.
Their hearts were kind, and their love was strong.
Their new friend could do no wrong.

The pup was hesitant at first,
He was scared, and his heart was hurt.
But the family played, laughed and helped him roam.
And soon the dog's heart had found a new home.

His new family loved him so,
And the dog's sadness began to go.
He wagged. his tail and licked their faces.
He had found new love in all new places.

The furry friend was in paradise,
He realised that peace could be found twice.
Though he missed his old owner dear,
He knew his new family was near.

Though his old family was gone,
The dog found a new life to live on.
He knew that his old friend would be proud,
For he was loved and happy, barking loud.
I took my story and began to illustrate it.
